Why a rug shop, not a carpet truck
It comes up in nearly every Lighthouse Point living room we walk into. The tile is already being seen to, and the good rug anchoring the room seems like it could just ride along on the same visit.
The trouble is that wall-to-wall carpet and a hand-knotted rug ask for opposite treatment. Carpet is stretched and fixed down, built to be scrubbed where it lies. A fine rug is a loose textile — wool or silk pile tied to a cotton foundation, colored with dyes that were never meant to sit under a hot extraction wand.
Clean a good rug in place and three quiet problems follow: the gritty sand stays locked in the base, the dyes can start to creep, and the rug dries slowly on your floor. A few hundred feet from the Intracoastal, in our salt air and summer humidity, that slow uneven drying is exactly how browning and a musty edge take hold.
A rug that grounds an entire room has earned a proper bath, not a passing scrub.

Every fiber and dye reacts its own way — the exact reason we test before we wash. A machine-made 8×10 in good shape is a straightforward wash. The same size hand-knotted rug with unstable dyes, years of buried grit and salt worked in from the water is a different job entirely.
What drives the price: the measured size, the fiber and how it’s built, dye stability, how deep the soil and coastal salt run, any pet contamination, and whether the fringe or edges want repair.
So the inspection comes first and the quote follows — once, before any work starts.

A knotted rug is a free-standing textile, not carpet stapled down. Scrubbed in place under a hot wand, it holds its grit, its dyes can bleed, and it dries slowly against your tile. We test it before we wash it. Every rug gets a pre-inspection with a pH reading and a dye-stability check in a hidden corner, because some older vegetable-dyed pieces will run if they meet water carelessly. Usually, yes. Urine dries into alkaline salts buried in the foundation, and blotting the surface never reaches them — so we submerge and flush the whole rug to dissolve them out. Yes, and every repair is done by hand at our own shop, never shipped out. That covers fringe repair and replacement, side and edge overcasting, hole repair and reweaving, moth damage, dry rot, resizing and full restoration. If a repair would cost more than the rug is worth, we tell you plainly instead of selling you the work.
Most rugs are back in about a week. Washing is followed by controlled speed-drying in a temperature and humidity managed room, which is what keeps the colors from migrating in our coastal air — so we never rush it.
